Here's Exactly How To Configure Your Optimal WordPress Blog

WordPress as a blogging platform is actually quite bland. I suppose that, with the support of the community, there really isn't a huge amount that the developers behind WordPress need to do to make the platform any better, apart from the odd security and interface upgrade. In all essence, it almost seems as though they copy wordpress versions from the past, with just a few additional features.

So, it is really simple. WordPress is a blank canvas for most of us, and with the added community support, you are free to mould it whichever way you like. Although WordPress is not a complex system, there are many ways that will allow you to easily mould it whichever way you like. Settings are important to start with, so we will kick things off there.

Essential Administration Configuration

With every single blog that I create (and believe me, there are many!), the first change that I make is my permalinks. Generally, I will go with the post title, plus a category in some instances. What this does in effect is simple. It places the right keywords in the URL to a post, which as you could guess, has some very nise SEO benefits.

I will generally change the URL in my general settings so that it includes the WWW. Although there is no real benefit of doing this from an SEO stand point, through testing, I believe that this encourages more trust from your visitors when they see this in the search engines.

As some themes support your profile information, it is worthwhile adding a short bio about yourself, changing your display name to your real name, plus creating an avatar by associating your admin email address with a Gravitar account. Fun photos work best.

Basic Plugin Installation

This phase is my favourite part. I am a self confessed plugin addict, I cant stop experimenting with new plugins, and love adding more functionality to my blogs.

The first plugin that I always use is All In One SEO. This allows you to add custom titles, and desctiptions to each page, which will allow you to appear more relevant in the search engines, plus the added ability to sell via the search engines.

You have probably heard many people talk about Google Analytics too. I know I did back in my early days, but it was not until I actually used it myself that I realized its true benefit. You can install Google Analytics using a plugin such as Google Analyticator, and monitor traffic using the plugin from the admin area in your WordPress blog.

Let's Not forget Themes

There are so many theme makers that are always going to compete for your attention, but most of these come at a cost. Remember, there is a large directory of free themes available via your appearance tab if you dont want to invest in themes just yet, all of which can be installed with a click of the mouse without having to mess around with FTP settings and the such. This is a great way to make your blog unique compared to the rest of the crowd.

I have only just started to scratch the surface. The copy wordpress platform is a very unique and easy to mould platform that really makes blogging and website creation simple. Most people including myself actually made a copy wordpress file so that they can deploy their favourite installation across multiple domains, but that is just me. The first step is installing the blog.
